Tuska: The Human Condition | 60 Works from 1964-1993 is a 140 page book that covers the remarkable story and artwork of Tuska. John Regis Tuska lived a life of creativity and created an extraordinary body of work. Tuska made his decision to avoid the mainstream and chart his own journey in a world where he could teach, be self-taught, and not be demanded upon. Tuska moved his family to Murray, Kentucky where he began his career as a teacher. After two years at Murray State, Tuska took the teaching position at the University of Kentucky where he began his 30 year tenure.

Elevation Creative Studios was asked to help tell this story to the rest of the world by designing this important piece along with the website. As a designer I was honored to have worked on it. Go to the website for more information, to order your book today and to help spread this story of our Lexington treasure. Also be sure to stop by The Breakers, John Tuska’s former home and museum to see all this great work in person. Its located in Lexington at 147 Old Park Avenue.

Pet Milk kicked off Saturday night in Lexington at ArtsPlace. It was shoulder to shoulder with people reading their books filled with poems and short stories as they viewed all the great artwork that was inspired by it. The night included music, cookies and what else Milk, fantastic art, and a very creative group of people. Pet Milk proves we need this more in Lexington. The interest and talent is here. Above is just a small peek at the crowd, the cool book and CD they handed out at the door plus check out the killer rabbit admission stamps. Just wish I would of picked up the very cool poster printer by Cricket Press. Congrats Kelli on a great event, we are looking forward to the next one. Read more about Pet Milk here.

Inspiration | Michael Ferris Jr.

I ran across these incredibly cool sculptures by Michael Ferris Jr. and had to share them. All his sculptures are portraits based on actual people and are made of recycled wood with pigmented grout.

Artist’s Statement for Sculptures
While I am interested in rendering an accurate likeness of my subject, what I find more compelling is the process of communicating the sitter’s “ inner world.” I do this by contrasting the sculpture’s stoic, classical form with its complex multi-patterned surface. Ultimately my intent is to express the psychological complexity of my subject.

I am interested in having a dialog regarding the use of recycled materials and ecologically minded art making practices. My work is comprised completely of recycled wood. These forms are then surfaced with a combination of overlaid recycled wood pieces and acrylic pigmented grout. Inlaid gaming tables from the Middle East have played a particularly important role in the aesthetic formation of my work.

I was browsing through the online gallery and noticed a lot of artists from this years Woodland Art Fair and I know their work was more expensive than a ticket for the Raffle.
